Help a Sex Predator: Defund the FBI.
“Defund the Federal Bureau of Investigation.” That's the latest idea from some politicians and millions of Americans.
Problem is, who is to guard the estimated 200,000 victims of human trafficking that occur annually?
Who is to hunt down the tortuous criminals that enslave tens of thousands of women and children each year in one of the world's worst countries for human trafficking, the United States of America?
When we hear people talking about defunding the FBI, I wonder if these proponents understand our judicial system — that some actions, given their insidiousness and threat, rise to the level of federal crimes. Consequently, we have specialized law enforcement to track down and deal with offenders of federal crimes: the FBI and federal prosecutors.
Yesterday was World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Of all the specialized days we celebrate to bring awareness, I can't think of one more important than this one.
I've worked with child protective services across the nation. I know this stuff, and it's terrible. Today many like to say human trafficking but I really think the word is slavery. In most cases, child slavery.
Groomers are everywhere. They target vulnerable minor children, particularly children in foster care. These perpetrators are cunning and strategic. Like any predator, they camouflage. They are hard to find.
They are sophisticated and must be because they know the cost of being caught.
So it takes a specially trained network of law enforcement not only for the insidious crimes around human trafficking but other threats like fentanyl, terrorism, and espionage.
I get that so much of our government is imperfect. I often must remind myself of Churchill who aptly asserted Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.
But never should we defund those who protect the most defenseless: our children.
That's why we have the FBI — to protect the most innocent ,and all of us. Tens of thousands of dedicated men and women, many putting their lives on the line for children of sex slavery, and you and me.
Who would want to defund that?
